Chicago police shot and killed a gunman who wounded two people outside a South Side fast food restaurant this morning, officials said.
No officers were injured in the second police-involved shooting of the night, police said.
The shooting occurred at about 12:55 a.m. in the 9200 block of South Justine Street, said police, citing early reports. Killed was Parise Mercer Jr., 18, of the 9000 block of South Marshfield Avenue.
The incident began with two officers spotting a gunman shooting two male victims in front of a Harold's Chicken restaurant in the 9100 block of South Ashland Avenue, according to a statement from police and Pat Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.
The officers chased the gunman, later identified as Mercer, first in their vehicle, then on foot, Camden said. Mercer ran east to Justine, where he tried to climb a fence, Camden said.
At some point, he pointed a handgun at the officers, prompting both officers to open fire, striking him, police and Camden said.
Mercer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 1:48 a.m.
The gunman's two victims were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, where they were being treated for non-life-threatening wounds, Camden said. Police also recovered a weapon at the scene, he added.
A representative from the Independent Police Review Authority had arrived on the scene, but had no details and couldn't confirm Camden's account.
In recent weeks, the Brainerd neighborhood has had several noteworthy shootings, including one last week, where a 13-year-old boy was discovered shot in the head. Also last week, a shots fired call in the 9400 block of South Justine -- blocks from this morning's shooting -- led to a police-involved shooting, where officers fatally shot a man.
