Two people died after being shot this afternoon by a gunman who then exchanged fire with Chicago police officers in the South Side’s Chatham community, officials said.
Neither the officers nor the gunman was wounded. The gunman and an alleged accomplice were both being questioned Friday night by detectives, but no charges have been filed.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. near 82nd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. As many as three beat patrol officers were talking outside a bank near 83rd and Cottage when they saw a man shoot a woman, then open fire on a man she was with, officials said.
The gunman then shot at the officers, but missed, authorities said. The officers pursued the gunman, who fled with another man in a vehicle that then crashed at 82nd Street and Drexel Avenue, authorities said.
Shots were fired by police at some point during their confrontation with the gunman, but he wasn’t wounded. The gunman and the other man were taken into custody near 86th Street and Ingleside Avenue.
"At this point, we have not determined that anyone else was hit," McCarthy told reporters at 82nd and Cottage Grove, flanked by First Deputy Superintendent Al Wysinger and other high-ranking police officials.
McCarthy said a gun was also confiscated during the incident.
Police had cordoned off numerous blocks around the shooting scene, including Cottage Grove Avenue between 82nd and 83rd Streets as well as 86th Street and Ingleside Avenue.
A man in his 20s was pronounced dead on arrival at Jackson Park Hospital, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. The woman, also in her 20s, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead later Friday night, the medical examiner’s office said.
The Independent Police Review Authority, which probes shootings involving Chicago police officers, was notified of the police involvement, a spokesman for the agency said.
