Chicago Police shoot, wound man on NW Side - 3rd Chicago Police Shooting in a Day

Chicago police shot and wounded a man during a incident where a cop stopped for what he thought was a traffic accident, officials said today.

The shooting happened at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Armitage and Kilbourn avenues in the Mayfair neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Chicago police and officials with the Independent Police Review Authority confirmed the shooting, but neither had details.

According to Patrick Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, the incident began with a narcotics officer stopping at the intersection for what he thought was the aftermath of a traffic crash near an awkwardly double-parked car on the street.

As the plainclothes officer sat inside his unmarked police car, the motorist from the other car approached the cop asking, "You got a problem?" Camden said.

The officer responded that he was a cop and didn't have a problem, Camden said. Soon, according to Camden, the man reached inside the police car, as if grabbing for something. The officer, fearing that the man was looking for a weapon, pulled his handgun and opened fire, striking the man, Camden said.

The man, 38, was taken to a local hospital for non-serious injuries, Camden said.
