Chicago's Black Plague - At Least Two Killed, six wounded in overnight shootings

At least two people were killed and six wounded in separate shootings overnight in Chicago, police said.

The first homicide happened about 7:12 p.m. Friday night in the 5400 block of West Washington Boulevard in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. The victim, identified as Ewonte Butler, 18, of the 500 block of North Laramie Avenue by the Cook County medical examiner's office, was standing on the street when someone rode up on a bike and fired shots, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

Butler sustained numerous wounds to the back and was transported in critical condition to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Mirabelli said. He was pronounced dead at 1:53 a.m. today at Stroger, according to the medical examiner.

The second slaying occurred about 2:40 a.m. this morning in the 3100 block of West 81st Street in the Wrightwood neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to a news release from Chicago police News Affairs.

A 22-year-old man, identified as Cory King of the 2800 block of West 82nd Street in Chicago by the Cook County medical examiner's office, was riding a bicycle on the street when a light-colored SUV drove past and someone inside the vehicle fired shots, hitting King in the back.

The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 3:27 a.m., according to the medical examiner.

In other overnight shootings:

A teen was found shot in the hand tonight on the West Side in the city's Douglas Park neighborhood, officials said. The shooting happened about 10:40 p.m. on the 1200 block of South Albany Avenue, said Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
According to preliminary reports, the teen suffered a wound to his hand. There was no immediate information available about the youth's age, condition or where he was taken for treatment, Alfaro said. The circumstances leading up to the shooting were unknown. Harrison Area detectives were investigating.

A 44-year-old man was wounded this morning in a shooting in the city's Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. About 12:12 a.m., officers and paramedics responded to the 5700 block of Halsted Street and discovered a man with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and wrist, police said.

According to preliminary reports, the man was standing on the sidewalk when he heard shots and realized he had been shot. The man was taken in fair condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Three males were shot about 1:52 a.m. today in the 900 block of North Harding Avenue in Humboldt Park on the West Side, according to a news release. All three were standing on a sidewalk when a man fired shots from an alley. A 15-year-old was hit in the upper chest and is in serious condition at Mount Sinai Hospital. An 18-year-old suffered a graze wound to this arm and a 19-year-old sufferred a graze wound to the shoulder; both are in good condition at Norwegian-American Hospital.

About 2:30 a.m. today, a 21-year-old man was walking in the 2300 block of North Long Avenue in the Hanson Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, according to a news release. He was hit in the left arm by shots fired from passing vehicle in what police said appeared to be a gang-related shooting. He is in good condition at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center.

As of about 4 a.m., no one was in custody for any of the shootings. Area detectives were investigating.
