After an 83-year-old South Elgin woman was arrested and charged with battery of a police officer and resisting arrest, a judge was called into work at night for a bond hearing so she wouldn’t have to spend the night in jail.
Police said the incident began about 4:05 p.m. Monday when an officer noticed Rosella Robinson sitting in a car in an area of Elgin known for drug and gang activity. When she saw the officer watching she made an illegal U-turn and drove away, police said.
After the officer stopped her, Robinson tried to drive away repeatedly until he reached into the car and switched off its ignition, police said. Robinson then grabbed the officer’s arm, scratching and beating on it until it bled, police said.
People arrested on similar charges are typically held in the city jail overnight until bond court the next morning, but police asked Judge James Hallock to come to the police station at 8 p.m. for an emergency hearing, citing Robinson’s age and health.
Hallock ordered her released on her own recognizance until an Aug. 9 hearing, and police said a relative drove her home.
