7 Murdered, 35 shot & wounded in weekend violenceSeven people were killed and at least 35 other people — including two children — were hospitalized after violence in the city this weekend.
Despite the violent weekend, Chicago Police announced Sunday that violent crimes have decreased for the 30th consecutive month and there have been 31 fewer murders this year than through June of last year, a 14.4 percent decrease. The crime stats also indicate a decrease in aggravated batteries, aggravated assaults and criminal sexual assaults.
The weekend violence started about 6:30 a.m. Saturday when police found three men dead of multiple gunshot wounds in separate shootings. Police found Tory Wilson, 29,dead near his home on the 8600 block of South Laflin, authorities said.
About the same time, police found Demitrius Crystal, 23, of the 6900 block of South Stewart, and Jeffrey Butler, 19, of the 8700 block of South Union, shot to death inside an SUV in the 6900 block of South Stewart, police said.
Late Saturday, a gunman fatally shot Deonre Douglas, 19, of the 2400 block of South Central Park, as he walked in the 1400 block of South Millard, authorities said.
On Sunday morning, Roosevelt D. Wiley III, of the 6500 block of South Bishop, was fatally stabbed in Ogden Park in the 1200 block of W. 64th.
Meanwhile, a 12-year-old girl was shot in the leg and buttocks while outside about 8:50 p.m. Saturday in the 4100 block of West Maypole, police said.
About 9 p.m. Saturday, an 8-year-old Alsip boy was shot in the abdomen area and critically wounded in the 7100 block of South Wood, police said.
Others wounded by gunfire include: • About 9:30 p.m. Friday, two males were shot in the 5100 block of West Hirsch Street, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
• About 1:28 a.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man involved in an argument in the 3900 block of West Polk Street was shot multiple times and critically injured, police said.
• About 3 a.m. Saturday, a gunman approached a 25-year-old man inside a car in the 2000 block of North Milwaukee Avenue and shot him, according to police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan. He was initially listed in critical condition.
• At 3:19 a.m. Saturday, a 26-year-old man in the 4300 block of West Wilcox Street when he was shot in the thigh, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.
• About 10:05 p.m. Saturday, a male was shot in the lower leg in the 4500 block of North Simonds Drive, Baety said.
• At 10:25 p.m. Saturday, four people approached a home in the 5700 block of South Carpenter Street and one of them pulled out a gun and shot a 20-year-old man sitting on a porch in his hip, police said.
• About 11:18 p.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old man standing in the street was critically injured when he was shot multiple times in the 4300 block of South Wells Street, police said.
• About 11:22 p.m. Saturday, a man who had just argued with someone about CDs was shot in the right leg while walking in the 4000 block of West Kinzie Street, according to a Harrison District police lieutenant.
• About 1:13 a.m. Sunday, a gunman inside a passing SUV opened fire on a group of people standing on the sidewalk in the 7900 block of South South Chicago Avenue, striking a 29-year-old man in the forearm, police said.
• About 15 minutes later, police said a 16-year-old boy walking in the 6900 block of South Damen Avenue was shot in one of his legs.
• About 3:32 a.m. Sunday, somebody inside a dark-colored vehicle shot a 27-year-old man in the forearm in the 6600 block of South Union Avenue, police said.
• About 4:30 a.m. Sunday, an 18-year-old man inside a vehicle was critically injured when he was shot in the neck in the 9600 block of South Ewing Avenue, Baety said. A female in the car was also hospitalized, but was police stressed that she was not shot.
• Just before 6 a.m., a 21-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the 2200 block of North Major Avenue, police said. A second person appears to have suffered graze wounds in the attack.
• About 6:50 p.m., a 32-year-old man was shot three times in the lower body during an argument in the 4800 block of South Prairie Avenue, police said.
At least 11 people, including a 13-year-old boy, were wounded in shootings across the city over a hot and steamy night, according to Chicago police reports.
Those shootings beginning Sunday evening added to a weekend violence toll that earlier included at least two deaths and 11 woundings by gunshot.
The latest casualties:
• At about 6:50 p.m. Sunday, a 32-year-old man was arguing with another man when the second man pulled a gun and shot the victim three times, police said. The man was taken to Stroger in “stable” condition.
• On the city's Southeast Side, at about 9:17 p.m. Sunday, police said a 27-year-old woman was with several people inside a garage in the 11100 block of South Ewing Avenue at about 9:17 p.m., when a gray-colored vehicle pulled up and fired several shots and fled.
The woman, shot in the head, was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.
• At about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, police say a 17-year-old boy was standing on the street with a group of people in the 1300 block of West 96th Street, when someone across from the group opened fire, police said.
The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the upper right leg. He was taken to Christ in good condition.
• At about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, police said a 47-year-old was approached by another man who struck up an argument with him in the 5200 block of West Crystal Street.
During the argument, the other man pulled a handgun and shot the victim in the abdomen before fleeing the scene on foot, police said. The wounded man was taken to Stroger in serious condition, police said.
• At about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, a 19-year-old man was walking on the street in the 5400 block of West Washington Boulevard, when another man approached, pulled a handgun and opened fire. The victim was struck in the chest and hand, police said. He was taken to Stroger in critical condition.
• Just before midnight Sunday, two 19-year-old men were shot by a gunman in the 8400 block of South Kingston Avenue. One victim refused medical treatment for a graze wound to the leg, while the second man was taken to Christ in good condition.
• A 13-year-old boy told police that he was standing on the street in the 7200 block of South Campbell Avenue at about 12:25 a.m., when he heard gunshots and realized he'd been shot in the leg, police said.
The boy was taken Holy Cross, where he was being treated. Police couldn't offer a motive for the shooting, but Chicago Lawn District officers said the boy denied being in a street gang.
• Just before 12:30 a.m. Monday, a man and woman were sitting in the vehicle in the 7200 block of South Dobson Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood when police said a gunman inside a dark-colored vehicle pulled up alongside them and opened fire.
The man, 54, was struck in the eye, while the woman, 56, was struck in the head, said police, citing early reports. Despite the wounds, both victims were talking at the scene and were taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.
• At about 1:50 a.m. Monday, a 31-year-old man was with a group of friends getting into a car in the 5500 block of South Pulaski Road when his group began arguing with a man in another vehicle, police said.
The man got out, pulled a handgun and opened fire, striking the victim in the upper back and delivering a graze wound to his head, police said.
The victim's friends drove him to Holy Cross Hospital before he was transferred to Christ, where his condition was described as "guarded," police said.
No arrests were made in any of the shootings.
Man found fatally shot on South SideA man was found shot to death in the Gresham neighborhood Saturday morning, police said.
At 8:31 a.m., police found Tory Wilson shot outside his home with multiple gunshot wounds in the 8600 block of South Laflin Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 7:43 a.m. on the scene, officials said.
After an autopsy was conducted Sunday officials ruled his death a homicide, officials said.
No other information was immediately available.
No one was in custody and Calumet Area detectives were investigating.
Cops: Man, 47, shot on West Side during argumentA 47-year-old man was shot and wounded during a quarrel on the city's West Side, police said this morning.
Police said the victim was approached by another man who struck up an argument with him at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 5200 block of West Crystal Street.
During the argument, the second man pulled a handgun and shot the victim in the abdomen before fleeing the scene on foot, police said. Police didn't say what the argument was about.
The wounded man was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said.
Police had no one in custody early today. Grand Central Area detectives were handling the investigation.
Woman shot in head on East SideA young woman was critically injured tonight in a shooting on the city's East Side, Chicago police said.
The woman, described only as being in her 20s, was shot in the head at about 9:17 p.m. in the 11100 block of South Ewing Avenue, police said, citing early reports.
The woman was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.
Zala couldn't provide any further information as investigators remained at the scene gathering details.
Teen shot, killedAn 18-year-old man was shot and killed in southwest suburban Joliet Saturday morning, officials said.
Anthony Fern, 18, of southwest suburban Crest Hill, was shot in the 100 block of Arch Court in Joliet, according to the Will County coroner press line.
He was pronounced dead at 1:41 a.m. Saturday.
An autopsy Saturday revealed he had been shot and ruled his death a homicide.
Gunfire wounds two children at play Ages 7 & 12Boy shot in Englewood, girl is hit in West Garfield Park
Hershell Robinson slumped Sunday on the front steps of his Englewood neighborhood home, bleary-eyed and unshaven after spending the night at a hospital waiting for his grandson to come out of surgery.
On Saturday night, he was sitting on those same steps while Treyvon Robinson, 8, played with his friends in the front yard and danced to music playing at a birthday party a few houses down in the 7100 block of South Wood Street.
Then the shots rang out, and Hershell Robinson saw Treyvon spin and fall.
"He was standing there by that fence post," he said. "I think I heard three shots. Other people said they heard four, but I stopped counting when I saw him fall."
The gunman disappeared into an alley while Robinson, 73, and his wife tried to stop the bleeding from their grandson's lower right abdomen.
Chicago Fire Department paramedics rushed Treyvon to Comer Children's Hospital, where doctors operated to remove a .22-caliber bullet from his abdomen. His grandfather said the bullet glanced off the boy's pelvic bone and caused a slight tear to his colon, and that he was expected to be discharged from the hospital later this week.
On the other side of the city, a 12-year-old girl was playing with her friend at Mason Park, at Karlov and Maypole avenues when a gunman emerged from a nearby alley and opened fire.
Her friend, Shacoya Collins, also 12, was on the swings nearby when the shots rang out. Shacoya said she crawled over to where her friend was sprawled on the ground near the sidewalk with gunshot wounds to her right ankle and left buttock.
"She wasn't saying nothing. She was crying," Shacoya said. "I said, 'Everything is going to be OK. Calm down.' She just kept crying."
Shacoya and her mother, Linda Hughes, said a neighbor drove the girl to Stroger Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Relatives of the victim, who lives half a block from the park where she was shot, could not be reached for comment. Hughes and her daughter moved to Indianapolis several years ago to escape the violence that occurs almost daily in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, where they were visiting this weekend. Neither said they expected that local residents would identify the gunman to police.
"A lot of people seen him, but they ain't gonna say nothing," Shacoya said as she played dominoes with her mother at a relative's home, near where her friend was shot. "They want to settle it their own way, and that ain't the right way."
Earlier this week, police officials announced that the number of violent crimes had dropped for the 30th consecutive month. But in neighborhoods like West Garfield and Englewood — where there have been a half-dozen shootings or homicides in the past week — the numbers are less than comforting.
Hughes said she used to try to help the police, but she later decided to move when she saw such little cooperation from the neighborhood.
But Robinson and his neighbors in Englewood were shocked at Saturday's shooting, saying their block is considered neutral territory by local gangs and is rarely the scene of violence. He and other neighbors speculated that the gunman was aiming for a large crowd of people attending the birthday party down the street.
"All he was doing was playing," Robinson said of his grandson. "An 8-year-old kid can't even play outside his house without some fool doing an indiscriminate shooting."
A police spokesman said no one was in custody for either shooting.
Robinson said his grandson stays with him during the summer, but he spends the school year with his mother in Alsip. He expected the boy wouldn't be shy about showing off his scars to classmates when classes resume this fall.
"He's kind of a ham with show-and-tell," Robinson said.
Man killed at CTA bus stop on West SideA 49-year-old man was hit and killed while standing at a CTA bus stop in the Fifth City neighborhood on the West Side early this morning, officials said.
David Bunch, whose address was not available, was standing at 3400 W. Jackson Blvd. when he was struck and killed by a car, officials said.
The car then fled the scene, police said, citing preliminary information.
He was pronounced dead at 3:50 a.m. at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
Police were questioning a "possible suspect" this evening, but no charges had been filed, said Officer Daryl Baety, a police spokesman.
Man, woman shot inside vehicle on South SideA man and woman were shot and critically injured this morning as they sat in a vehicle on the city's South Side, police said.
The couple was sitting in the vehicle in the 7200 block of South Dobson Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood just before 12:30 a.m., when police said a gunman inside a dark-colored vehicle pulled up alongside them and opened fire.
The man, 54, was struck in the eye, while the woman, 56, was struck in the head, said police, citing early reports. Despite the wounds, both victims were talking at the scene and were taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Police didn't immediately know the relationship between the two victims. No arrests had been made this morning.
Boy, 13, shot in Marquette ParkA 13-year-old boy was shot and wounded this morning in the city's Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.
The boy told police that he was standing on the street in the 7200 block of South Campbell Avenue at about 12:25 a.m., when he heard gunshots and realized he'd been shot in the leg, police said.

Police, citing early reports, said the shooting happened just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of West 96th Street, near the Chicago International Charter School's Longwood campus.
The 17-year-old boy was standing on the street with a group of people, when someone across from the group opened fire, police said.
The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the upper right leg. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition.
Police hadn't made any arrests early Monday and didn't offer a motive.
