Grandmother charged with murder after feeding grandson morphine and oxycodone

A 46-year-old woman is charged with killing her 10-month-old grandson by feeding the infant morphine and oxycodone, according to a complaint obtained Monday from the Milwaukee County district attorney's office.

The body of Royality Sanders was found April 28 after the infant spent the night sharing a mattress with his 2-year-old sister and his maternal grandmother, Lisa Sheniqua Humphrey.

The mattress, stained by the infant's vomit, was on the floor of an apartment the children shared with their grandmother and their 24-year-old mother in the 5100 block of N. 47th St.

According to a complaint, Humphrey told police that the night before the infant's body was found, she had been baby-sitting her grandchildren as well as children from the apartment below her.

She said she fed Royality from a yellow bottle before putting him on the mattress to sleep, according to the complaint.

The Milwaukee County medical examiner's office tested the contents of the bottle and found that it contained morphine. A blood screen of Royality tested positive for both opiates and oxycodone.

Humphrey told police she takes pain and sleep medications but said she hadn't taken any the night she baby-sat Royality, according to the complaint.

One of the children, however, told police that he or she - the gender of the child is not indicated in the complaint - saw Humphrey take three or four pills she removed from a paper bag on the floor of the room.

Humphrey later changed her story, admitting that she had taken medication that night but insisted she did not know how the drugs got into Royality's bottle, the complaint says.

Humphrey is charged with first-degree reckless homicide.
