Three people were charged today in connection with a string of strong-arm robberies in the South Loop neighborhood, police said.

Desmond Bell, 19, of the 4200 block of South Princeton Avenue was charged with five counts of robbery stemming from several incidents between July 7 and July 14, police said.

Angela A. Sewell, 21, of the 400 block of East 41st Street also was charged with five counts of robbery.

Larry Middleton, 18, of the 6500 block of South Claremont Avenue was charged with three counts of robbery.

Police allege the three approached their victims from behind, knocked them to the ground and wrestled property from their arms before fleeing in a vehicle.

Police had issued a community alert this week warning of the robberies in the vicinities of Roosevelt Road to 18th Street and between Prairie and Michigan avenues.

Belmont Area detectives worked with the victims to identify the vehicle used during the robberies. Detectives were then able to set up a surveillance that led them to the trio, who were later identified by witnesses and victims, police said.

Bell, Sewell and Middleton were scheduled to appear in court July 21. Bond court information was not available.
