The Chicago office of the FBI has begun a nationwide manhunt for a Chicago man wanted in a 2010 killing, according to an FBI release issued today.
Ernesto Montoya-Hernandez, 25, is being sought in connection with the April 2010 shooting death of Juan Mendez, 36, at a motel in the Pulaski Park neighborhood on the city’s Far Northwest Side. According to the release, witnesses said that the two men, who had shared an apartment in Chicago, got into an argument while attending a party at that motel and that Montoya-Hernandez pulled out a handgun, shooting Mendez and another man.
Chicago police charged Montoya-Hernandez with first-degree murder a few days later, according to the release, and a warrant for his arrest was issued. He couldn’t be found, however, and the release said it was believed he has left the state. Late in 2010, he was also charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Montoya-Hernandez, whose last known address is in the 4600 block of North Avers Avenue in the Albany Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, was described in the release as being 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He is also known as “Camacho” and has a large tattoo on his left shoulder.
Anyone who recognizes the man and has any information about his current whereabouts is asked to contact the Chicago at (312) 421-6700.
